Performance Notes & Best Practices

Proven strategies for optimal Proxmox VE performance and reliability

Virtualization Density

Rule of thumb: Allocate 2–4 GB RAM per VM for general workloads; 8–16 GB for databases or memory-intensive applications.

CPU overcommit: Proxmox supports 2:1 to 4:1 vCPU-to-physical-core ratios for mixed workloads. Avoid overcommit for latency-sensitive applications.

Storage IOPS: NVMe drives deliver 100,000+ IOPS; plan 500–1,000 IOPS per VM for typical enterprise workloads.

High Availability (HA) Clustering

Minimum 3 nodes required for quorum-based HA (prevents split-brain scenarios).

Fencing mechanisms (IPMI, network watchdog) ensure failed nodes are safely isolated.

Live migration moves VMs between nodes with zero downtime (requires shared storage or Ceph).

Ceph Distributed Storage

Minimum 3 nodes with 3 OSDs (disks) per node for production use.

Replication: Default 3× replication ensures data survives two simultaneous node failures.

Network: Dedicate 10 GbE+ for Ceph public and cluster traffic (separate VLANs recommended).

Performance: NVMe OSDs + 25 GbE networking deliver near-local storage performance with distributed redundancy.

Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) Integration

Deploy PBS on dedicated hardware or VM for incremental, deduplicated backups.

Retention policies automate backup lifecycle (daily, weekly, monthly snapshots).

Encryption protects backups at rest; offsite replication ensures disaster recovery.

ZFS Best Practices

Use mirrored vdevs (RAID10 equivalent) for balanced performance and redundancy.

Enable compression (lz4) for 20–40% space savings with negligible CPU overhead.

Allocate 1 GB RAM per TB of storage for ZFS ARC cache (improves read performance).

Core Features of Proxmox VE

Enterprise-grade virtualization platform with comprehensive management capabilities

Virtualization & Containers

KVM Virtualization: Full hardware virtualization for Windows, Linux, BSD, and other x86/x64 operating systems.
LXC Containers: Lightweight, OS-level virtualization for Linux workloads—boot in seconds, minimal overhead.
Mixed Workloads: Run VMs and containers side-by-side on the same host.

High Availability & Clustering

Automatic Failover: VMs restart on healthy nodes if a host fails (configurable priority and fencing).
Quorum-Based Clustering: Corosync ensures consistent cluster state across nodes.
Live Migration: Move running VMs between nodes without downtime (requires shared storage or Ceph).

Software-Defined Storage

ZFS: Native support for snapshots, compression, deduplication, and RAID-Z.
Ceph RBD: Distributed block storage with 3× replication, self-healing, and horizontal scaling.
LVM, NFS, iSCSI: Flexible integration with existing SAN/NAS infrastructure.

Backup & Disaster Recovery

Proxmox Backup Server: Incremental, deduplicated backups with encryption and verification.
Snapshot-Based Backups: Instant VM snapshots for quick rollback or cloning.
